Rathasapthami - 108 Surya Namaskars

Today is the most auspicious day of Ratha Saptami 🌞🙏 — a sacred festival dedicated to Lord Surya Narayana, the Sun God. It is observed on the 7th day (Saptami) of Shukla Paksha in Magha month, and it is believed to mark the day when the Sun God begins His divine journey riding His magnificent Ratha (Chariot), driven by Aruna. This day is also considered a powerful spiritual moment when the energy of Uttarayana (the Sun’s northward movement) becomes stronger, bringing renewed brightness, warmth, and positivity into nature and life.

The deeper significance of Ratha Saptami is that Lord Surya is “Pratyaksha Devata” — the visible and direct form of God that we can experience daily. The Sun is not just a cosmic object in the sky; He is the source of life for Earth and the entire solar system. The Ancient Vedic Ritual of Agnihotra: Harnessing the Power of Fire for Holistic Well-being

Agnihotra, an ancient Vedic ritual, is a sacred fire ceremony that has been practiced for thousands of years. A tragic incident occurred on the night of December 3, 1984 when the poisonous MIC gas leaked from Union Carbide factory at Bhopal. Hundreds of people died and thousands were hospitalized but there were two families – those of Shri Sohan Lal S Khushwaha and Shri M.L. Rathore, living about one mile away from the plant who came out unscathed. These families were regularly performing agnihotra (havan). In these families nobody died, nobody was even hospitalized despite being present in the area worst affected by the leakage of the toxic gas. Origin and Significance: Agnihotra finds its roots in the ancient Vedic scriptures, particularly in the Atharva Veda. The word "Agnihotra" is a combination of two Sanskrit words: "Agni," meaning fire, and "Hotra," meaning healing. The ritual involves the precise timing of offering oblations into a consecrated fire accompanied by the chanting of specific Vedic mantras. The primary purpose is to create a harmonious atmosphere by invoking the healing energies of fire.
The Ritual:
The Agnihotra ritual is performed at sunrise and sunset, precisely during the transition periods called sandhya (dawn and dusk). During this ritual, a small copper pyramid-shaped vessel is filled with offerings such as unpolished rice, Indian Cow ghee (Indian Cow clarified butter), Cow dung cakes. As the offerings are placed in the fire, the practitioner chants specific mantras, creating a vibrational resonance that is believed to have positive effects on the surroundings. Ingredients of offerings : Cowdung cakes, Akshata (Unbroken rice grains), Cow’s ghee

Procedure of Agnihotra

1. Direction : Sit facing the east

2. Method of kindling the fire 

Keep a small, flat piece of cowdung cake at the bottom of the vessel, and above it arrange cowdung cakes smeared with ghee in such a manner (2-3 layers of vertically and horizontally arranged cowdung cakes) that there is free flow of air within the spaces. Then, take a piece of cowdung cake, apply a little ghee to it and after kindling it, keep it in the Agnihotra vessel.

After some time, all the cowdung cakes will start burning. For kindling the fire, you can use a hand-held fan. However, never blow air from the mouth; else, germs from the mouth will enter the fire. Do not use inflammable substances such as kerosene to kindle the fire, since the fire should remain smokeless.

At sunrise : 1. Sooryaya swáahá, Sooryáya idam na mama; 2. Prajápataye swáahá, Prajápatay idam na mama

सूर्याय स्वाहा, सूर्याय इदं न मम ।

Take two pinches of rice grains on your palm or in a copper plate and add a few drops of cow’s ghee to it. Precisely at sunrise / sunset, recite the first mantra once and take the mixture of rice grains and ghee in the pinch (made by joining the middle finger, ring finger and thumb of the right hand). Offer the mixed ingredients (Rice grains sufficient to fill a pinch) to Agni while pronouncing ‘swáahá’.

Again, offer the mixture of rice and ghee to Agni with the right hand when reciting the second mantra once while pronouncing the word ‘swáahá’.

Origins of Trataka: Trataka has its roots in ancient yogic traditions and is mentioned in classic texts like the Hatha Yoga Pradipika and the Gheranda Samhita. The practice is believed to have originated thousands of years ago in India, where it was used by yogis to develop mental focus and achieve higher states of consciousness. Trataka was considered a fundamental practice for purifying the mind and preparing it for deeper meditation.

The Practice of Trataka: Trataka can be performed in various ways, but the most common method involves gazing at a specific object without blinking for an extended period. Then aditionally, practitioners would focus their gaze on a Oil lamp flame placed at eye level, about an arm's length away.


Benefits of Trataka Meditation: The benefits of Trataka meditation are numerous and far-reaching. By training the mind to maintain unwavering focus, Trataka enhances concentration and mental clarity. Regular practice can improve memory, cognitive function, and decision-making abilities. Moreover, Trataka is known to have a calming effect on the nervous system, reducing stress and anxiety levels. It also strengthens eye muscles and improves vision. Additionally, many practitioners
report experiencing a sense of inner peace, heightened intuition, and spiritual
awakening through Trataka.

Incorporating Trataka into Your Routine: To practice Trataka, find a quiet and comfortable space where you won't be disturbed. Sit in a relaxed posture with your spine erect and shoulders relaxed. Place the chosen object at eye level and focus your gaze on it without blinking. Try to maintain a steady gaze for as long as possible, but don't strain your eyes. If thoughts arise, gently bring your focus back to the object. Start with a few minutes of practice and gradually increase the duration as you become more comfortable.

Exploring the Essence of Pranayama: A short Guide to Powerful techniques.

Pranayama, an ancient practice rooted in yoga, is a powerful discipline that focuses on breath control to enhance physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. In this article, we will delve into the profound world of pranayama, offering an overview of its principles and exploring various techniques such as Kapalabhati, Bhastrika, Bhramari, Kumbhaka, and Nadi Shodhana. As life long Yoga practitioner, I practice these Pranayamas regularly and experienced the benifits. This article is intended to share my learnings with all readers.

Pranayama, derived from the Sanskrit words "prana" (life force) and "yama" (control), is the art of regulating one's breath to balance the body's energy. It goes beyond simple breathing exercises, aiming to harmonize the flow of prana within the body, leading to improved health and heightened consciousness.

Key Principles:

- Awareness of Breath: The foundation of pranayama lies in being mindful of the breath. Conscious breathing facilitates a connection between the physical and mental aspects of one's being.

- Rhythmic Control: Pranayama techniques involve rhythmic patterns of inhalation, exhalation, and retention. This rhythmic control helps in calming the mind and energizing the body.

- Gradual Progression: Beginners are advised to start with simple techniques and gradually advance to more complex practices as they develop control over their breath.

- It is important to know that in Yoga, after one gets control over his body by practice of postures (Yogasanas) he is said to be ready to practice Pranayama ie control of breath. So it is essential to do pranayama after you get perfection in the postures. Proper guidance from qualified teacher is a must. Not following this can cause serious consequences.

Few Pranayamas (Breathing Techniques):

1. Kapalabhati (Skull Shining Breath):

- Method: Rapid, forceful exhalations through the nose, followed by passive inhalations. The emphasis is on the forceful expulsion of air, engaging the abdominal muscles.

- Benefits: Cleanses the lungs, increases oxygen supply, and invigorates the mind.

2. Bhastrika (Bellows Breath):

- Method: Quick and forceful inhalations and exhalations through the nose, resembling the bellows of a blacksmith.

- Benefits: Boosts oxygen intake, enhances lung capacity, and stimulates the nervous system.

3. Bhramari (Bee Breath):

- Method: Inhale deeply and exhale while making a humming sound, like a bee. The vibration of the sound has a calming effect on the nervous system.

- Benefits: Reduces stress, alleviates tension, and promotes mental clarity.

4. Kumbhaka (Breath Retention):

- Method: Involves holding the breath after inhalation (Antara Kumbhaka) or after exhalation (Bahya Kumbhaka).

- Benefits: Enhances lung capacity, improves concentration, and balances the flow of prana.

5. Nadi Shodhana (Alternate Nostril Breathing):

- Method: Inhale through one nostril, exhale through the other, alternating between nostrils. This technique balances the two hemispheres of the brain.

- Benefits: Calms the mind, balances energy channels, and promotes mental clarity.

Conclusion:

Pranayama, with its diverse techniques, serves as a gateway to self-discovery and holistic well-being. Incorporating these practices into your daily routine can bring about profound changes in your physical health, mental clarity, and spiritual journey. As with any yogic practice, consistency and mindful engagement are key to unlocking the transformative potential of pranayama.

IMPORTANT:

Pranayama is recognized as a powerful breathing practice that fosters harmony. However, it is crucial to consult a qualified yoga teacher, before beginning this practice. Individuals with health issues, such as heart disease or severe back pain, should not do certain pranayamas or follow certain restrictions during breathing exercises.
